Restoration and Conservation Clean of Bolsover War Memorial (Historic England List Entry Number 1187012 War Memorial Archive, Imperial War Museum Ref: 14255)
Work is set to begin this week on the War Memorial, with the completion of conservation efforts aimed at ensuring its long-term preservation while honouring its historical significance.
The War Memorial, constructed around 1918 by Sir Reginald Blomfield, follows a standard design by the War Graves Commission and serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those it commemorates. Its materials, design, and inscriptions reflect the period and sentiments of the era in which it was created.
The memorial, made from Portland stone ashlar and featuring an octagonal shape, is accessed via two shallow steps leading to a two-tier plinth. Atop this base are metal plaques inscribed with the names of Bolsover men who lost their lives in both World Wars.
An assessment conducted on 4 July 2024 revealed that the memorial is showing signs of deterioration, including, accumulation of dirt, grime, weathering of the stone surfaces, fading and obscuring of inscriptions and carvings and the presence of pollutants and contaminants contributing to the degradation of the material.
Cleaning the War Memorial is crucial to preserving its historical integrity, ensuring the legibility of inscriptions, enhancing its aesthetic value, and supporting its conservation. The chosen cleaning method, based on a detailed assessment, is designed to minimise any impact on the memorial's heritage. It is chemical-free, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and non-hazardous, ensuring no damage to the stone surface. This work will be carried out by professionals experienced in conservation and heritage cleaning, adhering to the highest standards and following established guidelines.
By conducting this work with care and expertise, we ensure the memorial remains a fitting tribute to those it honours for generations to come.
